When I started in business 30 years ago, I was taught by the owners of some of Australia's biggest franchise groups how to attract, retain, and develop talent in the organisation, specifically so the franchisees do exactly that. Why did they pick me? It wasn’t about hard or soft skills. At that time, “greed is good” was commonplace in business, but what they saw in me was what is now called “personal skills” of initiative and drive, empathy, ethics, and most of all learning skills.

The process was to get me experience doing the urgent stuff for them, putting out fires, so it really didn’t matter if I messed up. When I worked out what was important to do, so their fires didn’t flair up, I was given more of that work - safe in the knowledge that if things got urgent, there was someone to help with that.
